SPACEFACE + PENNY PITCHLYNN/LABRYS
Below the following video, you will find the somewhat updated biographies of both Spaceface and LABRYS and a description of what they hoped to do for their summer songwriting residency in Savannah, Georgia (had the COVID-19 pandemic descended upon us in early 2020 and changed everyone’s plans.) Instead of traveling south that following June, Jake Ingalls and Daniel Quinlan from Spaceface, Penny Pitchlynn from LABRYS, and Ray June from Swat Meet Inc. joined forces with Amy Young from SixTwelve to produce a different residency project, “Building Together,” a fundraising album where students from our after school program and Swat Meet Inc’s program wrote songs and we found musicians and bands from Oklahoma and beyond to record them. Jarod Evans from Blackwatch Studios in Norman, Oklahoma mixed and mastered the album and we even had it printed on vinyl! (If you’re interested in a copy, you can order it HERE!)
Hailing from Memphis, TN, Spaceface is a psych pop band helmed by Jake Ingalls, a multi-instrumentalist and former member of the grammy-winning group The Flaming Lips. Ingalls consistently works to bring a world-class concert experience to the club level. Offering an innovative interpretation of psychedelic rock, Spaceface expertly blends transparent '70s references with striking modern elements. Their astrally crafted songs are truly something to behold. Eric Martin joins Ingalls to round out the group, now based in Los Angeles.
Spaceface’s first record, “Sun Kids” has been described as a hazy, psychedelic pop album, masterfully and elegantly composed. The work was engineered by Calvin Lauber of Ardent Studios/Young Avenue Sound in Memphis and mixed at Blatch Watch Studios in Norman, Oklahoma by Jarod Evans, an industry veteran who has worked with Broncho, Sports, Sufjan Stevens and many other notable artists. Collectively, their recordings and releases have featured artists such as Okey Dokey, Julianna Barwick, Mikaela Davis, Julien Baker, Penny Pitchlynn (Broncho), Phantogram and Matt Duckworth from The Flaming Lips.
Spaceface has remained active since their founding in 2013, touring extensively across North America. They have appeared at some of the country’s most popular festivals, including Desert Daze, Treefort Festival, Hangout Festival, Hopscotch Festival, SXSW and more. Through their vigorous touring schedule, Spaceface have shared the stage with a multitude of talented acts, such as Phantogram, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, The Oh Sees, The Flaming Lips, Morgan Delt, Stardeath and White Dwarfs, Broncho, Sugar Candy Mountain and White Denim.
The band's recording process is rooted in the spirit of collaboration, their most recent of which features Penny Pitchlynn who sang on their contribution to Blackwatch Studio's Christmas Album in 2019 and is also featured on their most recent album, Anemoia. Pitchlynn is mostly known for her work as bassist and back up vocalist in the indie/garage rock band BRONCHO as well as for her solo projects Penny Hill (2006 - 2011) and LABRYS (2017 - present). She is currently based in Norman, Oklahoma. Her latest solo project LABRYS kicked off with a cassette release in collaboration with artist OBNEAC and followed by a self-titled debut EP in 2017. It showcases a collage of her many talents, combining a raw, confident delivery, crunchy lo-fi guitars and vocals with catchy lyrics.
A back to back listen of the two groups should make it obvious why they wanted to work together. Having just wrapped up their next record, for their residency Spaceface set their eyes on a deeper collaboration with Penny (LABRYS) as more of a focal point, writing and recording a handful of songs with her voice leading the charge. It has been a beautiful collaboration.
